Beyoncé Tunes Out Lawsuit

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

Beyoncé Knowles is feeling the "Baby" love. Jennifer Armour, not so much.

A U.S. District Court judge has thrown out a copyright-infringement lawsuit filed against the Grammy winner by the Minneapolis singer-songwriter over rights to the 2003 hit "Baby Boy."

Armour filed the suit against Knowles in Houston last July, claiming the 25-year-old superstar stole her chart-topping single’s lyrics and hooks from a song Armour had written and shopped around in the months preceding the hit’s release.

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

MMM…I do!

Isaac Hanson, at 25 the eldest member of the brotherly pop trio Hanson, tied the knot Saturday with his longtime girlfriend, Nicole Dufresne, 22, according to People magazine. The couple wed at the Philbrook Museum of Art in the "MMMBop" rockers’ hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, the Hanson family is expanding rapidly and its men are getting a reputation for knowing what they want at a very young age.

Weezer’s Beer Lawsuit

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

Divided they stand, together they sue.

Looking for a cure for what ales them, the apparently still-together members of Weezer sued Miller Brewing Co. Friday, accusing the Milwaukee-based institution of unlawfully using the band’s image in a series of print ads to promote beer and other alcoholic beverages.

According to the alt-rock quartet’s complaint, the three ads that showed up in 2004 on the pages of Rolling Stone misappropriated the band’s name and image by stating that Weezer–along with "other bands and musical performers with whom [Weezer] do not wish to be associated in any advertisement"–endorsed Miller products.

Supreme Court KISS-Off

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

Vinnie Vincent won’t be raking it in for "Lick It Up."

On the first day of the U.S. Supreme Court’s new term, the Big 9 declined to consider a lower court’s dismissal of Vincent’s lawsuit against KISS, in which he claimed he was owed royalties for his contributions to the 1983 album "Lick It Up."

Vincent, whose real name is Vincent Cusano (Gene Simmons named him "Vinnie Vincent"), sued the band in federal court for $6 million in 1997, with the court finding that the guitarist had been a salaried member of the band and therefore had received all the moola he was entitled to.

Fleeing Bobby Brown

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

Ms. Houston, we have a problem.

A Massachusetts judge issued yet another arrest warrant for Bobby Brown Monday after the court-dodging singer failed to appear at a hearing for his delinquent child support payments.

It’s the second arrest warrant issued in Brown’s name in a little more than a year in connection with the ongoing legal saga of his failure to pony up financial support for his two teenaged children, La Princia and Bobby Jr., with Kim Ward.

DMX’s Concert Melee

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

One jam led to another for DMX this weekend.

The Ruff Ryder was coheadlining Saturday’s Back to School Jam when sound problems at Nassau Coliseum caused the mercurial X man to cut short his set and spark a melee that left one fan injured.

Elliott Yamin Gets Handsy

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

Idle hands may be the devil’s play things, but "Idol" hands are apparently the victims of mindless injury.

"American Idol" finalist Elliott Yamin is recovering from hand surgery after breaking his pinky finger in a freak accident, according to People magazine.

The 28-year-old third place finisher went under the knife for just an hour last week after breaking his left-hand digit in a bout of late night rock throwing–sadly, that’s not a euphemism–in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia.

George’s Double Whammy

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

If George Michael wants to keep singing about his "Freedom," he’d better learn to curtail his drug-induced snoozes. Or at least find less noticeable places to doze off.

In a nearly embarrassing detail-for-embarrassing detail repeat of the "Careless Whisper" singer’s February arrest, Michael was again found slumped over in his car in London early Sunday and arrested on suspicion of drug possession.

The former Wham! frontman was found hunched over the wheel of his BMW at a traffic light in the North London suburb of Cricklewood. Officers were called to the scene by fellow drivers who claimed their attempts at honking and window-banging failed to wake the aging pop star.

R.I. Club Owners in Court

Friday, September 29th, 2006

The owners of the Station nightclub in Rhode Island are going to pay, but according to some, they’re getting off easy.

Michael Derderian was sentenced Friday to four years in a minimum-security prison and taken into custody, and his brother Jeffrey was given a suspended 10-year sentence after the pair pleaded no contest last week to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter stemming from the 2003 fire that killed 100 people and injured more than 200 when the pyrotechnics went awry during a Great White concert at their West Warwick club.

The Derderians had installed highly flammable foam soundproofing insulation inside the venue in violation of the state’s fire code.

98 Degrees on Probation

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

A former member of 98 Degrees fought the law. Let’s call it a draw.

Jeff Timmons, the band mate without the famous ex-wife, the reality show dancing championship or the long-shot mayoral campaign, has pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors stemming from a traffic stop last spring.

The 33-year-old "I Do" singer copped to one charge of reckless driving and refusing to sign a citation during his arrest in Cocoa Beach, Florida, Apr. 23, and agreed to serve one year’s probation.
